The garden at 4803 N Western Avenue is showing signs of attention, it has been mowed. On Wednesday afternoon Robert Rawls of Aldermans Schulters office told the Bulldog that the garden was not active due to “safety” concerns and that the current Laborers Union strike which started July 1st was holding up progress. He confirmed that the garden was a joint effort between the Lincoln Square Chamber of Commerce and the Alderman’s Office.
Later in the afternoon Melissa Flynn of the Chamber of Commerce made herself available for a telephone interview. She explained to the Bulldog that the garden was an “excellent opportunity and the Chamber was taking their time, they were working with the Departments of the Environment and Sustainability” To see that things were done correctly. There “were no safety concerns” and the next step was” to bring in fresh soil with a clay base.” Most “of the pieces were in place to begin” all that was holding up the project was the citywide Labors Union strike.
Progress is progress, the garden has been mowed this week and the weeds are no longer knee high past the 4th of July. The Lincoln Square Foundation presumably still has the $10,000 in the bank to invest in the property. However, the questions remain why has a strike that has started in the last two weeks held up a garden where ground was broken on April 22nd and can any of the parties give an accounting of the donated funds ?
