The Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club (NBGC) will hold its 14th Annual Leaders of the Future Scholarship Luncheon on Tuesday, April 12 from 11:30A – 1:30P at Brauhaus (4732 N. Lincoln). This year, the committee will award up to $30,000 to 18 students from Lane Technical High School, Lakeview High School, Gordon Tech High School, Maine West High School, Lincoln Park High School, and North Town Academy among others.
The scholarship program is funded by annual contributions from a combination of local businesses, alumni, and foundations. Past scholarship recipients have gone on to attend such institutions as DePaul University, Northwestern University, Illinois State, Indiana State, Southern Illinois, and Northeastern Illinois among others.
Begun in 1984, the concept for the program came about as an idea by alumni of the NBGC. “Alumni recognized that in order to keep older members at (NBGC), they needed to develop an incentive that would far outweigh the financial benefits of bagging groceries so they came up with a college scholarship program,” said Jim McNulty, Executive Director of the NBGC
Students in the 8th grade through junior year of high school are eligible for awards of $500 to $1,000. High school seniors and college students are eligible for $3,000 to $10,000. Interested students undergo an extensive application process that examines their grades, SAT score (if applicable), recommendation letters, and an interview with a panel of past recipients. Scholarships are renewable every year and, over time, students build up and keep a restricted college fund.
“The goal of the program is to retain older youth to help develop them into men and women and, as the program is called, leaders of the future,” McNulty said.
The NBGC will celebrate its 80th anniversary on October 22, 2011 at Chevy Chase Country Club (1000 N. Milwaukee Wheeling, IL) with a gala and an opportunity for alumni, friends and neighbors to reconnect. The inaugural NBGC class will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the event. Community members are invited to attend. For more information, please visit www.nbgc.org.
