Jill Wohl of the Raise Your Hand group claims that only 750 persons have applied to run for Local School Council as of last Monday. There are more than 600 schools in the system, so this is a stunning lack of interest.
The Bulldog has been writing about the lack of school transparency, but there is another issue, most schools are not making an effort to do community outreach. In all cases seen by The Bulldog last week the schools were not following their own procedures for posting material in the school regarding LSC elections.
Wohl says she called WBEZ during a monthly call-in to ask Chicago Board of Education member Jesse Ruiz about LSCs. He replied that he announced the LSC elections at the Board of Education meeting.
“Wow. That would reach what- an audience of tens?” Wohl writes.”The system needs thousands to run,” she notes.
As noted by The Bulldog, the only school that had a full slate before CPS stopped us from talking to the schools was Trumbull, which has a full slate of parents and educators running to replace a nearly non-functi0ning LSC.
LSCs determine the use of hundreds of thousands of dollars each of tax dollars. They determine whether or not to retain a principal and they lead the rejuvenation of neighborhoods through the leverage placed on it with a reinvigorated neighborhood school or a deteriorating school.
They are also a sign of parent engagement.
