Congressman Mike Quigley and US Senator Mark Kirk announced they introduced legislation to restore the Honest Services law. The law was a key in prosecuting former Gov. George Ryan and the Chicago Sun-Times Publisher Conrad Black. However it was struck down.
Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich originally was charged under the statute. The charges were dropped when the court narrowed the law.
The two politicians also introduced legislation that would target political corruption. The State Ethics Law Protection Act would “allow states like Illinois to fight pay-to-play without Federal interference.”
The legislators note that Illinois was forced to remove state bans on pay-to-play because the Federal government threatened to withhold highway funding.
