Waguespack, Progressive Caucus Challenge Rahm; Tougher IG Law Wanted

April 25, 2013
By Patrick Boylan

The Chicago City Council’s Progressive Reform Caucus plans to introduce legislation to guarantee funding for the office of city Inspector General. Crain’s Chicago Business reports the effort points to a fight with Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

“These measures put some real teeth into the office’s operations,” Ald. Bob Fioretti told Crain’s. Members of the caucus include Scott Waguespack and Ameya Pawar. Five aldermen are members of the group.

A second reform caucus, the Paul Douglas Alliance, includes James Cappleman, Harry Osterman and Ameya Pawar. Eight members belong to the Paul Douglas group.

Pawar belongs to both groups, the only alderman with dual affiliation.

Fioretti does not belong to either group. There are fifty aldermen in city council. There is also 18 members of the council black caucus and fifteen members on the Latino caucus.  Membership in a caucus is generally non-exclusive, meaning council members belong to several caucuses, depending on the needs of their constituents and the alderman’s personal interest.
