Illinois Rep. Ann Williams issued a press release yesterday that was very critical of HB 148, a bill that would require county sheriffs to issue permits for concealed firearms.
Illinois is one of just two states, the other is Wisconsin, that does not have a carry and conceal law. Opponents of the measure believe passage will lead to more violence and oppose provisions that exempt the proposal from home rule exemptions.
Supporters point to lower crime in states that enact the measure.
Williams pointed to concerns that the proposed law had gaps in records for checking mental health records. The law would “allow mentally ill individuals to carry guns in public places,” Williams said in her press release.
