Garvey’s team was given bad information, leading to just two players being ready to play at the scheduled time. Officials realized their mistake and allowed the team time to gather.
As Garvey players and parents made frantic calls, Bell girls warmed up and played in the high school gym under the eye of Coach Mark Klein, Bell parents began to realize that the underclassman game would be played at nearly the same time as the upperclassman game, being held in a different gym.
The confusion took its toll on Garvey, with the team being held scoreless by Bell for three quarters. However, the team settled down in the fourth quarter and went on a run.
In low scoring games, such as in the lower levels of girls basketball, any basket is important. And the Bell lead of 4-0 wasn’t able to hold against a seven point run.
A lead of 5-4 was capped with a blind backwards shot by Garvey that scored.
The Bell girls rally brought them to within one point with less than a minute to go.
It was Garvey’s turn to hold on. But Bell was unable to put the chicken in the basket.
Bell Coach Mark Klein noted that the loss of the underclass center to a minor injury and the center to fatigue changed the team’s energy level. “It was tough,” Klein told The Welles Park Bulldog. “In the past others have stepped up” but they weren’t able to against Garvey.
